We understand it can be difficult to keep your pet's teeth clean, so oral health problems are very common. Research shows that around the age of two years old, 70% of cats and 80% of dogs have some sign of dental disease. Oral health issues usually start with a buildup of sticky plaque that hardens to form tarter. If not removed by professional dental cleanings, this buildup can lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Pets may lose teeth and be prone to infections that may affect their heart, lungs, and kidneys.

During a dental health cleaning, our veterinarian will examine your pet for signs of tooth decay and damage. Our veterinarians will use short acting anesthesia for the comfort of your pet and the most effective cleaning possible. Our veterinary hospital uses an ultrasonic cleaner to remove plaque buildup. We then polish all of teeth to create a smooth surface that will resist the growth of bacteria. If your pet needs advanced dental care such as root canals, we will refer you to a local veterinary dental specialist.

While professional dental cleanings are important, they cannot replace regular at-home care. Daily brushing is the best way to protect your pet's dental health, and it's a lot easier than you may think. There are many options available to start brushing your pet's teeth. There are full sized angled toothbrushes or you may wish to try a toothbrush that fits on your finger for better control. When brushing, be sure to use canine or feline friendly toothpaste. It is never safe to use human toothpaste in your pet's mouth. Please ask us about other dental health options while you are in for your pet's visit.

Dr. Hickin by far has been the best veterinarian I've brought one of my pets to. She went out of her way on numerous occasions to help me with my elderly cat Jack. She listens and takes her time. You never feel rushed or a burden. It has been a long time since I've worked with a doctor that showed they cared this much about their patients. Thank you Dr. Hickin for everything.
